Learn how to start and manage a WiFi hotspot business using AroFi, a free-to-start MikroTik hotspot billing platform for routers, internet packages, vouchers, customers, payments, wallets and network monitoring.
Whether you are building a WiFi business in Uganda, Kenya or another country, the core idea is the same:
Internet connection → MikroTik router → AroFi billing → customer portal → paid WiFi access.
AroFi's current direct Mobile Money focus includes supported payment integrations in Uganda, while operators in other countries can still use the MikroTik hotspot and management features subject to the payment options available for their deployment.
What is AroFi?
AroFi is a cloud-based MikroTik hotspot billing and WiFi business management platform.
Instead of managing hotspot users manually inside WinBox, the business owner manages the operation through the AroFi Console.
With AroFi, you can manage:
MikroTik routers
WiFi hotspot sites
Internet packages
WiFi vouchers
Customer sessions
Online users
Sales and transactions
Business wallet
Withdrawals
Agents
Reports
Router monitoring
Remote support access
Customer captive portal
This means a small WiFi operator can run a hotspot in a much more organized way.
Why WiFi hotspot businesses are growing
Affordable public and community WiFi continues to create opportunities in areas where customers want internet access without purchasing a large monthly home broadband package.
A WiFi hotspot business can work in places such as:
Instead of giving customers the WiFi password permanently, a hotspot billing system allows you to sell internet based on time, data, speed or number of devices.
For example:
1 Hour WiFi — UGX 1,000
3 Hours WiFi — UGX 2,000
24 Hours WiFi — UGX 3,000
7 Days WiFi — UGX 10,000
The actual pricing is completely up to the WiFi business owner.
Step 1: Open AroFi and create your WiFi business account
Visit AroFi and select Register Free.
AroFi is designed so that a new WiFi operator can begin setting up a business without first building their own billing server.

Step 1 — Open the AroFi homepage
Click Register Free to begin creating your WiFi business workspace.
A workspace represents your WiFi business inside AroFi.
Step 2: Enter your business information
Select:
WiFi Business Owner
Then enter the name of your WiFi business.
For example:
Central Soroti WiFi
Kampala Connect
Nairobi Hotspot
Jinja City WiFi
AroFi can generate the portal slug automatically.
If somebody referred you to AroFi, you can also enter their referral code.

Step 2 — Enter business details
Keep your business name simple and recognizable because customers may see it on the WiFi portal and other business pages.
Step 3: Enter the account owner's information
Next, enter the details of the person responsible for managing the account.
You will normally provide:
First name
Last name
Login email
Phone number

Step 3 — Enter owner information
Use an email address and phone number that you control because these details may be important for account recovery, notifications and support.
Step 4: Create a secure password
Create a strong password and confirm it.
Read and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before creating the workspace.

Step 4 — Create your workspace
Avoid sharing your AroFi password with technicians, agents or customers.
If another person needs access to your business, use the appropriate staff or access-management features instead of sharing the main account password.
Step 5: Understand the AroFi dashboard
After creating the account, you will arrive at the AroFi Console.
This is the main control centre for your WiFi business.
Insert Image 5 here
Step 5 — AroFi dashboard
From the dashboard you can access important areas such as:
Sell Internet
Manage internet packages, vouchers and customers.
Money
Review sales, transactions, wallet activity and withdrawals.
Reports
Analyze business and network activity.
Network
Manage routers, access points, online users and remote access.
Staff
Manage staff members and voucher agents.
Settings
Configure your business profile, appearance, payments and account settings.
Support
Open support tickets and access documentation.
The dashboard also gives the business owner a quick overview of sales, earnings, withdrawals, network activity and wallet information.
Step 6: Add your MikroTik router
The MikroTik router is the device that controls the customer's hotspot access.
Inside the AroFi Console, go to:
Network → Routers
Then click:
Add Router

Step 6 — Open Network and Routers
AroFi can manage multiple routers, which is useful when a WiFi business grows to several locations.
For example, you may eventually have:
Router 1 — Main Shop
Router 2 — Hostel
Router 3 — Trading Centre
Router 4 — Public Square
All of them can be managed from the same business platform.
Step 7: Enter the router and hotspot details
When registering the MikroTik, enter information that makes the router easy to identify later.
This may include:

Step 7 — Fill in router details
Choosing the correct MikroTik setup mode
This is important.
Create Customer WiFi
Use this when AroFi should prepare the MikroTik as a customer WiFi hotspot.
This option is suitable when you want the router to provide the customer WiFi network and captive portal.
Existing Hotspot Setup
Use this when the MikroTik already has an existing hotspot configuration that you want to preserve.
The setup focuses on connecting the router to AroFi's billing and authentication environment without replacing the entire existing network design.
If the router is already running a production network, always understand the selected setup mode before applying configuration changes.
Prevent WiFi tethering
AroFi also provides a TTL Anti-Tethering option.
This is useful when you do not want a customer to purchase one WiFi package and then share that connection with several other people using their phone's hotspot.
Where appropriate for your network, enable anti-tethering controls as part of the router configuration.
Step 8: Copy the MikroTik setup scripts
After registering the router, AroFi generates the setup commands required to connect the MikroTik.
The setup screen separates the process into scripts.
Insert Image 8 here
Step 8 — Copy router scripts
Run the scripts in the order shown by AroFi.
The onboarding script connects the router to the hotspot billing environment.
The remote access script enables supported remote-management and technical-support functionality.
Never publish your unique router registration commands publicly because they can contain information specific to your router.
Step 9: Open MikroTik WinBox
Open WinBox on your computer.
Connect to your MikroTik router using its IP address or MAC address.
After logging in, open:
New Terminal
Insert Image 9 here
Step 9 — Open WinBox and Terminal
The Terminal allows RouterOS commands to be pasted directly into the MikroTik.
Copy the command from AroFi, paste it into the Terminal and press Enter.
Allow the script to finish before running the next required script.
Step 10: Confirm that the router is online
When the configuration completes successfully, return to the AroFi Console.
Your MikroTik should begin reporting its status to AroFi.
Insert Image 10 here
Step 10 — Confirm router online
When the router shows Online, the main connection between AroFi and your MikroTik is working.
Your WiFi business can now move on to creating internet packages and serving customers.
Create WiFi internet packages
Once your router is connected, go to:
Sell Internet → Internet Plans
Create the packages you want your customers to buy.
An internet package can include:
package name
price
duration
data allowance
download speed
upload speed
device limit
For example:
30 Minutes
UGX 500
1 Hour
UGX 1,000
3 Hours
UGX 2,000
24 Hours
UGX 3,000
Weekly WiFi
UGX 10,000
You decide the prices based on your internet costs, market and customers.
AroFi can also support different package structures for multiple devices and other hotspot use cases.
Sell WiFi using vouchers
Not every customer wants to pay online.
That is why AroFi also supports WiFi vouchers.
You can generate voucher batches and sell them physically.
For example, you can print cards containing codes such as:
X7KD92
824917
ARO4F2
A customer connects to the WiFi, opens the captive portal and enters the voucher code.
Once accepted, the purchased internet package is activated.
This is useful for:
kiosks
restaurants
reception desks
agents
schools
hostels
cash customers
rural areas
A WiFi business can therefore combine digital payments and printed vouchers.
Use agents to sell WiFi vouchers
A growing WiFi business may not want all voucher sales handled by the owner.
AroFi allows the operator to register voucher agents.
For example:
Agent: Main Street Kiosk
Territory: Soroti Town
Commission: 5%
The business can allocate voucher stock to that agent and track sales separately.
This makes AroFi suitable for operators who want to expand beyond one physical location.
Monitor online WiFi users
One of the biggest advantages of using a proper hotspot billing system is visibility.
Instead of guessing who is connected, the operator can monitor active customer sessions.
AroFi can help you see information such as:
online users
active sessions
package being used
connected router
data usage
session duration
hotspot location
network activity
This is especially useful when you operate several MikroTik routers.
Track your WiFi sales
A WiFi business should not rely only on Mobile Money messages or handwritten records.
AroFi provides business records for:
internet sales
voucher sales
transactions
payment status
wallet balance
withdrawals
agents
reports
This makes it easier to understand how the hotspot is performing.
AroFi business wallet and withdrawals
Earnings from eligible completed transactions can be reflected in the AroFi business wallet according to the platform's applicable settlement and fee rules.
The business owner can then manage payout details and request withdrawals where the feature is available.
For account protection, withdrawal operations may require security controls such as a payout number and withdrawal secret.
Never share a withdrawal secret with another person.
Free WiFi billing system for MikroTik
One of the biggest barriers for someone starting a WiFi business is the cost and complexity of billing software.
AroFi is designed to provide a free-to-start option so a small hotspot operator can begin without first paying for a large enterprise billing system.
This makes it useful for people searching for:
free WiFi billing software
free MikroTik hotspot billing system
MikroTik voucher system
WiFi business management software
hotspot billing software
RADIUS billing for MikroTik
WiFi hotspot software for Africa
prepaid internet billing system
As the business grows, additional plans or platform services may be available depending on the account and deployment.
Starting a WiFi business in Uganda
Uganda is a natural market for community and prepaid WiFi because many customers use Mobile Money and often purchase internet in smaller amounts.
A WiFi entrepreneur can combine:
Fibre / wireless ISP connection
with
MikroTik
plus
AroFi
to create a managed hotspot business.
For supported deployments, AroFi can integrate customer payments with available Mobile Money channels such as MTN MoMo and Airtel Money.
Customers can therefore connect to the hotspot, select a package and complete the available payment flow without the WiFi owner manually creating access credentials.
Using AroFi for a WiFi business in Kenya
The same MikroTik hotspot business model can also be used in Kenya.
A Kenyan operator may want to use AroFi for:
Payment methods can differ between countries, so the available payment integrations should always be confirmed for the specific deployment.
For example, a Kenyan WiFi business may require locally appropriate payment integrations rather than assuming that Uganda's MTN/Airtel setup applies there.
The important point is that the MikroTik hotspot billing architecture itself is not limited to one city or one country.
Can AroFi be used outside Uganda and Kenya?
The router and hotspot concept can be used in many locations where MikroTik is deployed.
That makes AroFi potentially relevant to WiFi operators in countries such as:
However, telecom payment integrations, currencies, regulations and gateway availability differ between countries.
Therefore, do not assume that every payment provider shown in one market is automatically available in another.
The safest approach is:
Use AroFi for the WiFi and MikroTik operation, then confirm which local payment channels are enabled for your country and account.
What equipment do you need to start a WiFi business?
At minimum, you normally need:
1. Internet connection
This may be:
fibre
fixed wireless
LTE/5G
Starlink
another ISP connection
2. MikroTik router
The router runs the hotspot network and controls customer access.
3. Access points
If you need to cover a large area, use additional WiFi access points.
4. AroFi account
AroFi provides the business and hotspot billing layer.
5. Reliable power
Use a UPS, inverter or other backup system where power interruptions are common.
Example WiFi business setup
A small deployment might look like this:

Customers
The customer joins the WiFi network.
The captive portal appears.
The customer selects a package.
The customer pays using an available payment option or enters a voucher.
AroFi activates the customer's access.
The MikroTik provides the internet session.
The business owner monitors everything from the AroFi Console.
How much can a WiFi hotspot business make?
Revenue depends on factors such as:
location
customer traffic
internet cost
package prices
competition
network quality
uptime
coverage
marketing
payment charges
equipment costs
For example, if a hotspot sells:
100 packages per day at UGX 1,000
gross daily sales would be:
UGX 100,000
Over 30 days:
UGX 3,000,000 gross sales
This is only an example, not a profit estimate.
The operator still has to account for ISP costs, electricity, equipment, payment fees, commissions, maintenance and other operating expenses.
Tips for running a successful WiFi hotspot business
Provide stable internet
Customers will not keep paying for slow or unreliable WiFi.
Use clear packages
Avoid confusing customers with too many package choices.
Cover the right area
Put access points where customers actually spend time.
Monitor the network
Look for offline routers, abnormal data use and poor signal areas.
Make payments simple
The fewer steps customers need to complete, the better.
Offer vouchers
Some customers still prefer cash.
Protect the network
Use anti-tethering, secure router access and strong admin passwords.
Track your business numbers
Know your daily sales, monthly sales and actual operating costs.
Why use AroFi instead of managing MikroTik manually?
MikroTik is extremely powerful, but managing a growing WiFi business directly from RouterOS can become difficult.
AroFi gives the business owner a simpler management layer.
Instead of repeatedly working with raw router configuration, RADIUS records and individual hotspot users, you can manage business operations through a dashboard.
This becomes even more important when you have:
The router continues doing what MikroTik does best.
AroFi handles the WiFi business workflow around it.
